Why Jewellery Packaging Matters
Packaging might not seem like the most important part of buying jewellery, but it makes a big difference to the planet. The fashion and accessories industry is known for wasteful packaging, often using layers of plastic, bubble wrap, and non-recyclable materials that are pretty quickly thrown away.
Globally, over 141 million tonnes of plastic packaging are produced every year, and most of it doesn’t get recycled. Instead, it ends up in landfill, pollutes the ocean, or is burned, adding to greenhouse gases. All that waste for something used once doesn’t make sense.
That’s why we want to do things differently.
Our Eco-Friendly Jewellery Packaging
We’ve been working on a sustainable packaging method that’s practical and aligns with our brand identity, thoughtful, authentic and eco-conscious. Here’s what we use:
- Cotton Drawstring Pouches: Each Magpie order is sent in drawstring pouches made with cotton. These fabric bags are lightweight, reusable, and stylish, making them a great eco-friendly alternative to disposable packaging. They’re designed for repeated use and we urge our customers to keep them for storing jewellery, organising small items, or gifting purposes.
- Stamped Branding: We stamp our logo onto each pouch with our custom eco-friendly stamp, made from environmentally-sourced oak and natural eco rubber. It’s a simple, plastic-free way to add our branding without wasteful stickers or labels.
- Honeycomb Postage Bags: We’ve recently made the switch to honeycomb paper delivery packs. Compared to bubble wrap, these recyclable postage bags protect jewellery with layers of kraft paper and honeycomb paper. This durable alternative offers the same level of protection as bubble wrap, while being biodegradable and plastic-free.
