Sustainable Jewellery Care: How to Protect Your Pieces and the Planet

As more of us are starting to think about our environmental footprint, sustainable practices have become a key part of our lives and are playing an important role in shaping how we approach fashion.

While a lot of the sustainability conversation around jewellery focuses on ethical sourcing and materials, there’s an equally relevant but often overlooked point: how should we care for our jewellery?

Longevity is key to sustainability. Good jewellery care means it will last longer, which leads to fewer replacements, less waste and a lower demand for mining metals and stones. Keeping your jewellery clean and storing it properly goes a long way in making sure your pieces look great for years to come.

Keeping Your Pieces Clean

Knowing Your Materials

The method you use to clean your jewellery depends on the material it’s made from. Here are my top tips for keeping your pieces looking fresh by using at-home DIY solutions that are good for the environment:

Silver

Silver can tarnish and appear dull as a dark layer of silver sulphide develops over time. To keep and restore its shine, I would recommend using a silver polishing cloth. These are made of soft, non-abrasive textiles that protect your pieces from unwanted scratches. My go-to is Hagerty’s silver polishing cloth, made from 100% cotton with a cleaning solution in the fibres that gently removes oxidation.

Another method of removing tarnish is by using a homemade solution of 1tsp of baking soda and 2tsp warm water. The consistency you are looking to create is a paste. Apply this mixture to your silver jewellery with a soft bristle toothbrush. I like to use baby toothbrushes as they are also a convenient size for cleaning smaller pieces. Use a cotton cloth to dry your jewellery thoroughly before putting it back into storage. It’s important to note that this solution should only be used to clean plain silver, as it can damage or scratch gemstones that are sensitive and not suited to it.

Gemstones

For jewellery with gemstones, gently wipe your delicate pieces using a soft, lint-free cloth that will remove dirt or grime without causing harm. Taking this first step is also important as it stops the cleaning solution from getting trapped in any crevices.

Then use a simple solution of mild dish soap and warm water. Gently scrub your pieces with a soft-bristled toothbrush to restore brilliance. Rinse with water and, again, dry thoroughly with a soft cloth before putting them back into storage.

Small Habits, Big Impact

At the end of the day, taking care of your jewellery isn’t just about keeping your pieces looking good but also about making more mindful choices. A small habit can make a big difference. Regular jewellery maintenance means you can reuse and repurpose one-of-a-kind pieces that can’t be replaced. Investing in vintage jewellery is a great way of giving old pieces a second life while supporting the circular economy, protecting your pieces and the planet.
